Known globally as one of the most legendary vocal groups in music history, The Four Tops will proudly celebrate 70 years of timeless hits in 2026. Originally formed in Detroit in 1953 as The Four Aims, the group changed their name in 1956 and began their recording career that same year. Since the very start, they have embodied brotherhood, love, resilience, integrity, and perseverance—a foundation that has carried them through decades of musical excellence.

With an astounding twenty-four Top 40 hits in the U.S.—including ten Top 20 singles and two number-one smashes—The Four Tops have left an indelible mark on music. Their international appeal is equally enduring, with more than twenty chart-topping singles in the UK and hits across the world. Their vocals and timeless songs have touched millions of hearts and ears, and their reach is multi-generational.

The quartet recorded their first single for Chess Records in 1956 and spent seven years on the road and in nightclubs, singing pop, blues, Broadway, and—most notably—four-part harmony jazz. When Motown’s Berry Gordy Jr. learned they had secured a national appearance on The Tonight Show, he signed them—without an audition—to be the marquee act for Motown’s Workshop Jazz label. That proved short-lived, but soon Stubbs’ powerhouse baritone lead and the exquisite harmonies of Fakir, Benson, and Payton produced one smash after another with the legendary songwriting/producing trio Holland-Dozier-Holland (H-D-H).

Their first Motown hit, “Baby I Need Your Loving” (1964), made them stars. Their sixties catalog is indispensable to any retrospective of the decade. Soulful and bittersweet, their songs were across-the-board successes. “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” a No. 1 R&B and Pop smash in 1965, became one of Motown’s longest-running chart toppers. It was quickly followed by the fan favorite “It’s The Same Old Song” (No. 2 R&B/No. 5 Pop). Their commercial peak was highlighted by a romantic trilogy: the No. 1 “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “Standing In The Shadows Of Love” (No. 2 R&B/No. 6 Pop), and “Bernadette” (No. 3 R&B/No. 4 Pop)—an extraordinary run of instant H-D-H classics. Other unforgettable hits included “Ask The Lonely,” “Shake Me, Wake Me (When It’s Over),” “Something About You,” “You Keep Running Away,” “7-Rooms Of Gloom,” and their covers of “Walk Away Renee” and “If I Were A Carpenter.”

The group was also extraordinarily popular in the U.K., landing thirty-one Top 40 hits, eleven of which reached the Top 10.
After H-D-H split from Motown, producer Frank Wilson oversaw the R&B Top 10 hits “It’s All In The Game” and “Still Water (Love)” at the start of the 1970s. The Tops also teamed with Motown’s top girl group, the Supremes, post-Diana Ross. Billing themselves as The Magnificent Seven for a series of albums, they landed yet another hit with their cover of “River Deep – Mountain High.”

When Motown relocated to Los Angeles in 1972, the steadfast Tops decided to remain in Detroit and sign with another label. They kept up a string of hits with ABC-Dunhill, including the Top 5 “Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I’ve Got),” the Top 10 “Keeper Of The Castle,” and R&B Top 10 singles such as “Are You Man Enough” (from Shaft In Africa), “Sweet Understanding Love,” “One Chain Don’t Make No Prison” (later covered by Santana), “Midnight Flower,” and the disco perennial “Catfish.”

In 1980 the group moved to Casablanca Records. The following year, they returned to No. 1 with “When She Was My Girl,” making them one of the few groups to score hits in three consecutive decades. They also charted with the ballads “Tonight I’m Gonna Love You All Over” and “I Believe In You And Me”—later immortalized by Whitney Houston in 1996. The Tops’ music also reached Hollywood with “Back To School Again” in Grease 2.
1983 proved to be a seminal year with their appearance on the smash NBC prime-time special Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever. One of the highlights of the show was a “battle of the bands” with The Temptations, as both groups performed their hits back-to-back. The performance was so successful that the two groups continue pairing up for tour dates to this day.

The Four Tops returned to Motown that year, releasing two more albums—Back Where I Belong (1983) and Magic (1985)—which produced R&B hits written by H-D-H, including “I Just Can’t Walk Away” and “Sexy Ways.” They later signed with Clive Davis at Arista Records, where they scored their final U.S. Top 40 hit with “Indestructible,” the theme of the 1988 Summer Olympics. Overseas, they achieved a massive hit with “Loco In Acapulco” (written by Phil Collins and Lamont Dozier), which reached the Top 10 in both the UK and the Netherlands.
The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and in 1997 they received a star on the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame. Rolling Stone ranked them No. 79 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. They were also inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2005.

In 2008, The Four Tops were honored with a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement, with the President of The Recording Academy stating: “Their outstanding accomplishments, legendary passion, and artistry have positively affected our culture and will continue to influence and inspire generations to come.”

The group’s incredible longevity is a testament to their unwavering commitment to music and to each other. Today, the legacy of the group is carried on by four extraordinary singers who share a direct lineage with the original four members.

The families of Levi Stubbs, Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Renaldo “Obie” Benson, and Lawrence Payton remain actively involved in managing and protecting the group’s legacy, copyrights, and global presentation.
